ATS (Automatic[Automated] Train Stop): 自動列車停止装置。旧国鉄はすでに 1964 年までに地方線を含む全線に完備。私鉄ではいまだに設備していないところもある。 

ATC (Automatic[Automated] Train Control): 自動列車制御装置。JR は新幹線と全幹線に設置。
