April 5th, 2000 - Apple introduces Darwin 1.0

Darwin 1.0 binary installer ready for download
Apple today expanded its commitment to open source by releasing a binary installer for Darwin
1.0, the advanced operating system at the core of Mac OS X. With one click, the installer will
install a release version of Darwin 1.0. As the current internal Mac OS X development version of
Darwin, this release allows developers to modify the kernel for future versions of Mac OS X.

                    Live source code available immediately
In addition to introducing an installer, live source code for Darwin is now available immediately
from Apple's public CVS servers. As Apple engineers and Darwin Developers in the community
modify the source for the core of Mac OS X, it will be updated in real time on the server. Apple is
proud of this major step forward in bringing the community and Apple together in enhancing
                    Darwin.

                    Darwin compiles for Intel
The Darwin 1.0 source code includes preliminary support for Intel, allowing developers to begin
bringing Darwin to the Intel platform. All sources compile for Intel, and there is preliminary
support for some Intel systems. However, in order for Darwin to run on Intel, driver development
and work on platform support will be necessary. Apple looks forward to working with the
community to make Darwin a great cross-platform operating system for the open source
                    community.
